Former Jewish District and Podgorze ghetto
Kazimierz district of Krakow used to be inhabited by large Jewish community that lived in Poland until the Second World War. It has the largest preserved synagogue complex in Europe which is evidence to a large Jewish community and culture that flourished in Poland in the past centuries. Kazimierz has been granted UNESCO World Heritage status in 1978, alongside Krakow Old Town and Wawel Hill Castle complex.
This tour starts at St Mary’s Basilica in Krakow where you learn of the Jewish community first living in Krakow and why it has moved to nearby Kazimierz town. You are then guided through the Kazimierz district and told about the Jews who lived in Kazimierz, their culture and tradition. You also visit places where American director Steven Spielberg filmed his famous movie Schindlers List. From Kazimierz district of Krakow you are taken across the river to the Podgorze district where the Nazi- Germans created Jewish ghetto during the Second World War. Podgorze is also where Oskar Schindler’s factory was located and many Jews employed. One of Podgorze ghetto’s inhabitants was minor Roman Polanski, future world famous film director. You learn how he escaped ghetto and how he survived the war. You see the remains of the ghetto wall and hear stories of people who rescued and helped Jews to escape Holocaust.
