Ojców National Park
Explore one of the most beautiful national parks in Poland
with its Jurassic rock fomations, ravines, castles and caves.
Visit the smallest yet one of the most beautiful national parks in Poland. Ojców National Park is located 16km north of Krakow, in Kraków Częstochowa Upland. Its most characteristic features are Jurassic limestone rocks that were formed over millions of years as a result of the deposition of animal skeletons and shells on the bottom of the sea covering today’s upland, subsequently their uplift and finally erosion. It encompasses two valleys, with famous Prądnik valley – named after Prądnik river that runs through the park. So the park consists of gorges, ravines, ancient rock formations, springs and 630 caves. In one of these caves, Ciemna Cave, Polish archeologists found the oldest human remains in Poland dating 120,000 years old. Yet, the most famous cave is Łokietka Cave named after prince (later king) Władysław Łokietek, famous for starting the unification of the Polish provinces after the period of defragmentation in the 14 th century. Whilst fighting over this territory with the Czechs, he went into hiding in one of the caves which is named after him. Later, his son, Casimir the Great, king of Poland, built a number of castles along the border with the Czechs known as Trail of Eagles’ Nest, and one of the them, Pieskowa Skała Castle is one of the park’s greatest attractions. In the park, there is a number of restaurants that serve local speciality – a trout. Its natural habitat is the Prądnik river but there is also a company that owns several fish ponds in the park where it breeds trouts.
