Next on the Polish side of the Tatra Mountains are Mnich and Kościelec, Kominiarski Wierch and the most characteristic peak which is visible from Zakopane – Giewont – with the legendarny steel cross put up years ago by highlanders. The profile of the mountain resembles giant sleeping knight, giving rise to various legends and poems. It is worth mentioning that the highest peak of Tatra Mountains is Gerlach (2,655m), located completely on the Slovakian side, whilst on the Polish side, it is north-western peak of Rysy (2,499m), with the Polish-Slovakian border running through it.

Visitors to the Tatra National Park can take adventage of 275km of marked hiking trails of varying difficulty. Tatra Mountain trail offers splendid views over mountain ranges, valleys and post-glacial lakes, boasting diverse flora and vegetation. In addition, one can find here plenty of traces of the unique culture of the Podhale highlanders (górale), which arose from the century-old pastoral tradition. In the late 19th- century, a small village of Zakopane developed into a climatic health resort. Artists such as Stanisław Witkiewicz created a new architectural style – a blend of the local mountain region style with villa-guest house style of the Alps, which was applied to many buildings throughout the town. Zakopane soon became major tourist destination also for the lovers of winter sports. The cable car to Kasprowy Wierch was completed in 1936.
